Bangladesh are getting ready for their first Test match against Zimbabwe in Sylhet. The team management is in a rare but welcome situation where they have too many wicketkeepers and not enough space behind the stumps. Head coach Phil Simmons said that the team still hasn't decided who will wear the gloves when the season starts on April 20. There are four choices.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of the Test, Simmons said with a smile, "That’s a good question (laughs). We haven’t decided yet who will keep. We’ll finalize it tomorrow. But what I can say is that Mushfiqur will not be keeping."
The 15-member Test squad includes Mushfiqur Rahim, Zakir Hasan, Jaker Ali Anik, and Mahidul Islam Ankon — all capable of donning the gloves. However, Mushfiqur hasn’t kept in Tests for quite some time and is unlikely to resume the role now. Zakir Hasan, often deployed as an opener, generally avoids keeping in the longer format but remains an emergency option.
That leaves Jaker and Ankon as the two realistic contenders for the wicketkeeping role in the first Test.
Though he won’t be keeping, Mushfiqur continues to remain a vital part of Bangladesh's Test setup, both for his experience and professionalism.
Simmons heaped praise on the veteran, stating, "I must say that Mushfiqur has given so much for Bangladesh cricket. Both him and Mahmudullah, Bangladesh cricket owes a lot to them. Mushfiqur is as professional as they come. He thinks he can get the runs that he deserves from the point of view of how much he is working. He wants to do well. He is working on being in good nick. He has had a phenomenal run against Zimbabwe. Let's make sure he gets where he wants to, in this Test."
