Contesting the national elections for the first time, Shakib alone got 185,388 votes. His nearest rival advocate Kazi Rezaul Hossain of Bangladesh Congress got 5,994 votes. A total of 48.38 percent votes were cast in this seat.
Earlier, Shakib sought the nomination in a total of 3 seats. Apart from Magura-1 and Magura-2 constituencies of his own district Magura, he also sought nomination for Dhaka-10 constituencies comprising important areas of Dhaka. However, Shakib was nominated by the Awami League for the Magura-1 seat.
Shakib is the third cricketer among Bangladeshi cricketers to become a member of parliament. At the same time, as the third captain, he got the status of being the policy maker of the country. Earlier, Naimur Rahman Durjoy was elected MP for the first time from among the cricketers. He became a Member of Parliament for Manikganj-1 Constituency in 2014 and was also elected in 2018. For the Awami League in 2018, Mashrafe was elected as a Member of Parliament from the Narail-2 constituency for the first time in the national elections, and has contested for the same seat this time.
However, Shakib will now shift his focus to cricket as the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2024 is scheduled to start on January 19. Shakib will lead Rangpur Riders in the tournament.
