In the modern era, cricketers have a special interest in franchise leagues. Along with the opportunity to play with players from various countries, the financial allure is also a major factor. In many cases, the situation becomes such that cricketers opt to play in franchise leagues over representing their country. Recently, a similar incident cost USA’s Aaron Jones' spot in the national team.
The T20 World Cup was like a dream for the United States. They even defeated a team like Pakistan. Aaron Jones particularly caught attention. Later, he secured a team in the CPL (Caribbean Premier League), and performed well. However, at the same time, the USA had a series against Namibia on their soil. Jones chose the CPL over representing his country. As a result, he was dropped from the national team.
Starting from Friday, the USA will play in a tri-nation series as part of the World Cup League 2. For this series, the USA has announced the same squad as the Namibia tour. Aaron Jones did not take a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to play in the CPL
On the other hand, Andries Gous, who was playing for Trinbago Knight Riders, suspended his CPL contract to go on the Namibia tour. He is included in the squad. After the USA's consecutive victories in Namibia, the selectors made the decision to drop Aaron Jones. Despite playing brilliantly in the CPL final and getting a chance in the T20 team, his poor performance against Nepal might lead to his exclusion. Since his debut in 2018, Aaron Jones has been a key member of the USA team. So far, he has played 48 ODIs for the USA, scoring 1,574 runs at an average of 35.77, with 11 fifties and one century. In T20s, he has scored 621 runs with a strike rate of 110.69.
