Former India opener Virender Sehwag criticizes Bangladesh star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan heavily after Bangladesh’s narrow 4-run defeat against South Africa on Monday (June 10) in New York in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 group-stage match.

In the match, Tanzim Hasan Sakib ran riot through the South African top order to leave them reeling at 24-4. However, David Miller and Heinrich Klaasen depicted a comeback partnership to bring Proteas back into the game before Bangladesh pulled things back in the death overs. In reply, the bowlers of South Africa showed their class to hand Proteas a 4-run narrow victory over Bangladesh.

Chasing the target of 114 runs, Shakib lost his wicket at the crucial time of the game when he was trying to pull off a shot off Anrich’s Nortje’s bouncer. At that time, Bangladesh were reduced to 37/3. Sehwag criticized Shakib's batting at such a moment of the match. He said that he did not see the impression of experience in Shakib's game.

“If Shakib Al Hasan was included in the squad for experience, then we were not able to see it. At least spend some time at this wicket, it is not like you are not Hayden or Gilchrist who can play a pull shot of a short ball, you are just a player from Bangladesh. Play according to your standards. When you are not able to play hook or pull, so just play the strokes that you know,” Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.

Shakib has been in off-form for a long time in T20 cricket. And Sehwag thinks that Shakib should retire from T20 cricket as his time is over a long ago. “I felt that Shakib's time in T20 cricket was up a long time back, during the last T20 World Cup. He has been captain for such a long time, he is such a senior player, and after that, if your numbers are like these, he should be ashamed of it, right?” Sehwag added.
