Bangladesh are gearing up for a two-match home Test series against Zimbabwe, with the first game set to begin on April 20 in Sylhet. While the hosts have traditionally dominated this fixture, skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto is not taking anything for granted.

Speaking at the pre-series press conference, Shanto emphasized the importance of staying grounded and maintaining the same intensity against all opponents—regardless of their cricketing stature. “It’s not about thinking whether it’s Ireland or Zimbabwe. We just need to focus on playing good cricket,” said Shanto. “I truly believe we have what it takes to perform consistently well in all five or six Test matches scheduled this year.”

Bangladesh have enjoyed a solid record at home against Zimbabwe, and with a nearly full-strength squad, expectations are high once again. However, Shanto was quick to shut down any talk of ‘small teams’ or ‘easy opponents.’ “This narrative often comes from outside—the fans or the media—that Zimbabwe is a smaller team. For us, it's all about how well we execute our plans. The approach we take against Zimbabwe should be the same as we’d take against South Africa or any other top side,” he said.

“There’s no mindset in the dressing room that we’re facing a lesser opponent. We have areas to improve, of course, but I believe we’ll overcome those.”

When asked about the team’s playing XI and who might take up wicketkeeping duties, Shanto remained tight-lipped but hinted at strong internal competition. “Everyone is prepared to play. (Smiles) I’ve answered this many times before—there’s a very healthy competition in the squad. Who will keep wickets? You’ll find out after the toss tomorrow.”
