Craig Overton (born April 10, 1994) is an English cricketer who plays for Somerset and England. He is an all-rounder who bowls at medium speed with his right arm and hits right-handed. He made his international debut for England in December 2017.
Domestic career
Overton made his first team debut for Somerset in the 2012 County Championship against Lancashire. In 2012, he played seven county championship games and took 12 wickets averaging 30.25. He also scored 75 runs at 10.71; achieved its first first-class half a century.
Overton also made his List A debut that same year. Overton was unable to play for much of the 2013 season due to a back fatigue fracture. He managed to play a single top notch match in which he only took a single wicket.
In 2015, Overton was the leading wicket taker for Somerset in both the County Championship and the One Day Cup with 47 and 12 wickets, respectively. He continued his stroke form in longer form of the game when he averaged 28.38 in 16 county championship innings.
International career
Between 2011 and 2012, Overton played international cricket for the English U19s for the first time and played a total of 16 youth ODIs. Overton received his first international appointment in June 2015 when he was selected to cover Chris Jordan for England's third One Day International (ODI) against New Zealand.
In June 2017 Overton was called up to the English squad of Twenty20 International (T20I) for the series against South Africa. In September 2017, Overton was named in England's test squad for the 2017-18 Ashes series.
He made his Test debut in the Second Test in Adelaide on December 2, 2017. He claimed Australian captain Steve Smith as his first Test wicket. In February 2018, he was accepted into the English ODI squad for the series against New Zealand after Liam Plunkett was sidelined due to an injury. On June 21, 2018, he made his ODI debut for England against Australia.
On May 29, 2020, Overton was called up to join a group of 55 players to begin training ahead of the international games that begin in England following the COVID-19 pandemic.
On June 17, 2020, Overton joined England's 30-man squad to train behind closed doors for the test series against the West Indies. On July 4, 2020, Overton was named as one of the nine reserve players for the series' first friendly.
On July 30, 2021, Englishman Ben Stokes announced in the England vs. India series that he would take an "indefinite break" from all cricket with immediate effect. Overton was added to England's squad as his replacement.
