In the fifth match of the Tri-Series in Zimbabwe against the West Indies, Mendis scored 94 runs. But during the ODI series, Mendis was named in the squad for the remainder of the series against England, as a replacement for Kusal Perera, who suffered a quadriceps strain in the second ODI. In his comeback match he was sent off again for no reason. In the fourth ODI he struggled in the middle order scoring just 5 runs and England won the series 3-0.
