The tough phase (2019-20)
The 2019-20 home season has been billed as an important season for Rishabh Pant. MS Dhoni had announced a break from international cricket and India started the season in search of a new foothold for wicket, with Pant one of the frontrunners. However, normal left-handed performances and the emergence of KL Rahul as a wicket-keeper option meant Pant slid the pecking order down.
A somber show in the 2020 IPL season didn't help either. Pant, who had accumulated 1,172 runs with a strike rate of 168 in the last two seasons, managed to collect only 343 runs with a strike rate of 113.
The pants were consequently removed from the limited overs team that toured Australia in 2020-21. However, he kept his place on the test team, but did not make it into the eleven of the first test in Adelaide.
During this time, Pant was heavily criticized by fans and the media. Contemptuous comparisons with the Indian cricket legend MS Dhoni have often been made. There have been cases where the crowd "Dhoni! Dhoni!" when Pant made a mistake in the field.
The Rise (2021-Present)
India were knocked out for 36 in the second innings of the 2020-21 Border Gavaskar Trophy First Test, so they lost the Test by 8 wickets despite having a healthy lead in the first innings. The unavailability of Virat Kohli for the remainder of the series prompted India to change their line-up to increase the clout. Rishabh Pant was selected for the second test in Melbourne ahead of Wriddhiman Saha.
While Pant scoring a valuable 29 in the first innings of the Melbourne Test, he made a career change in Sydney. With 97 overs to survive on the final day, India did not start well as they lost the wicket of Ajinkya Rahane, who scored a century in the last Test, early in the day. Since Jadeja broke her arm at the beginning of the game, India was also close to a batsman. Pant also suffered a minor injury in the game. Still, he was promoted in order and came out with a 5 to hit. He hit 12 fours and 3 sixs in his counter-attack of 97 runs with only 118 balls. Its 148-strong partnership with Pujara put India in a victorious position. The match would eventually end in a tie, making the 4th Test in Brisbane the final.
Australia had not been defeated in Brisbane since 1988. India had a number of first-choice players - Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Ravichandran Ashwin, Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, Hanuma Vihari, Umesh Yadav, Ishant Sharma - unavailable due to injury and the underdogs entered the game. Rishabh Pant put in a match-winning performance on Day 5 when India had a big goal of 328 in the 4th innings. Pant scored an unbeaten 89 with 9 fours and a six and hit the winning runs too. He was also named "Player of the Game"
In July 2021, before warming up for the test series against England, Pant tested positive for COVID-19. He did not travel to Durham with the Indian troop, Pant remained in quarantine.
