Following the statement, tributes started pouring from all quarters in and outside the country. One of the long time mates of Mashrafe, veteran opener Tamim Iqbal said Bangladesh's elevation in limited over cricket was masterminded chiefly by captain Mashrafe bin Mortaza.

"We should always remember him. He guided us from 2015 to 2019. It was because to him that the world sees us differently in one-day cricket,"

Tamim Iqbal said. "Nobody, no cricketer, cricket board and supporters, should ever forget what he has done for Bangladesh cricket," he added. Mashrafe led Bangladesh to 2015 World Cup quarter-final where they lost to India. In 2017, Bangladesh made into the semi-final of Champions Trophy. Out of 87 ODIs as skipper, Mashrafe won 49 matches in total stands with the 56.32% of win. In T20Is, Bangladesh won 10 matches out of 28 under his captaincy. Apart from that Mashrafe led Bangladesh winning bilateral ODI series against India, Pakistan and South Africa. Former Bangladesh captain Habibul Bashar mentioned Mashrafe bin Mortaza as someone special. He said, "Mashrafe is not like just another regular player. "He is different. His is a special case. Mashrafe playing in a game is a huge thing. It is also a huge news that he is stepping down as a captain. But if he is fit, he still has a lot to offer to Bangladesh team," he said. "Look at our winning rate under Mashrafe; it is a lot. It is never easy to lead a side that boasts of a number of stars. It becomes easier to play matches with the stars but it is very tough to manage all the stars and play. "Mashrafe did that very nicely over the years. He is however not retiring yet and is available for selection. I will definitely miss his captaincy. According to me, Mashrafe is one of the best captains ever," Bashar added.
