All three players were part of the squad that ran through a Test series defeat down under recently but went injured. They have recovered from the injury and broke into the national side. Henry and Ferguson played first-class cricket and two domestic 50-over matches but Trent Boult took part in the Test series that beat India. Kyle Jamieson retained his spot while Hamish Bennett and Scott Kuggelieijn couldn’t make the cut.
Meanwhile, Head coach Gary Stead claimed that playing Australia on their home turf is one of the toughest challenges. The coach also expressed his delightfulness in welcoming the pace trio and also conceded that Jamieson would play a significant part in Australia.
“Playing Australia in Australia is one of the great challenges in world cricket and you know you will be severely tested in all aspects of the game. Our one-day unit is a pretty settled one with plenty of experience and I think that showed in the recent series against India.” Gary Stead said as quoted by ESPN Cricinfo.
“It’s great to welcome back the class of Trent, Matt and Lockie who spearheaded our run to the Cricket World Cup final last year. Kyle’s made every post a winner since his international debut this season and he’ll be a handy asset to have in Australia. It’s an honour to compete for the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy and I know it means a lot to the players to have the trophy stay in New Zealand," he added.
It is worth mentioning here that New Zealand national cricket team are the current holders of the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy, having regained it in the year 2017. On the contrary, Australia have won most titles with as many as five wins. The first two ODIs will take place in Sydney on 13th and 15th of March before moving on to Hobart for the third match on March 20.
