Neil Wagner, 39, is set to conclude his domestic career in New Zealand with Northern Districts (ND) in the final round of the four-day Plunket Shield, starting on March 29. Wagner could have a fairytale farewell if he helps ND win the match and clinch the Plunket title.

Ahead of the final round, ND lead the table with 89 points, while Wellington (82) and Canterbury (80) remain in contention for the title.

Wagner's emotions were on full display last month when Northern Districts (ND) lost to Canterbury in the Super Smash Eliminator. He was nearly in tears, hinting that his career might be drawing to a close. At the post-match presentation, ND captain Jeet Raval chose to keep things under wraps, neither confirming nor denying if it was Wagner’s last competitive game in New Zealand.

Since the 2005-06 season, Wagner has taken 560 first-class wickets in 133 matches in New Zealand, averaging 27.03. No bowler has claimed more first-class wickets in the country during this period.

In the Plunket Shield, Wagner’s tally of 365 wickets places him behind only Stephen Boock (492), Ewen Chatfield (370), and David O'Sullivan (368) on the all-time wicket-takers list.

Wagner writes on his social media, "7 years ago I came to New Zealand and started my career here for Otago against ND! Tomorrow it goes full circle playing my last game in NZ for ND against Otago! Before heading overseas to go play county cricket and the next venture! Ive been extremely lucky and fortunate to represent these two great associations who gave me the platform to be a Blackcap and play on the highest level! Some amazing memories and like to thank all my mates through the years along the way and also my family for the amazing love and support!!"

Wagner will remain playing in the English County.
