During the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Indian skipper Rohit Sharma’s frustration over a dropped catch by Yashasvi Jaiswal didn’t sit well with former Australian cricketers Michael Hussey and Alyssa Healy.
The crucial moment occurred in the 40th over of Australia’s innings when Marnus Labuschagne, on 46, flicked a ball from Akash Deep towards the gully. Jaiswal, positioned in the slip cordon, missed a straightforward catch, allowing Labuschagne to survive and continue his innings.
Rohit, visibly angered by the error, punched the air in frustration, a reaction that drew criticism from commentators and cricketing figures alike. Michael Hussey, speaking on Fox Cricket, expressed disappointment in Rohit’s reaction, stating:
“I’ve got to be honest; I don’t like that reaction from the Indian skipper. I appreciate he’s emotional and wants wickets, but as captain, you’re the one who has to send a message of calm and support. No one means to drop a catch, especially a young player like Jaiswal. He’ll already feel bad for letting a chance slip, especially off someone like Marnus Labuschagne.”
Australian Women’s captain Alyssa Healy echoed Hussey’s sentiments, pointing out the importance of maintaining composure when working with younger teammates. She stated:
"Particularly when you need him [Jaiswal] to walk out and open the batting alongside you, to make some runs and try to win a Test match for your country.”
