India batter Virat Kohli had a disappointing start to the 2024 T20 World Cup, managing only 1 run off 5 balls in the team's opening match against Ireland in New York on June 5. Kohli, eager to hit big shots right from the start, ultimately fell while attempting a lofted shot. He advanced down the pitch to a delivery from Mark Adair but ended up edging the ball to third man.
During his brief stay at the crease, Kohli appeared out of control and his efforts to hit big shots caught the attention of former India player Sanjay Manjrekar. Manjrekar commented that Kohli seemed to be feeling the pressure of maintaining a high strike rate, an issue that has attracted considerable criticism in the past.
"I am very surprised that he got out. He got out while trying to play a shot. Somewhere he was feeling the pressure of strike rate. In IPL he managed it. In this match, he didn't need to play a brisk knock. He would have played normally as in such pitches he would not get out if he plays normally as he has the class of Test cricket," said Manjrekar while speaking to ESPNcricinfo.
It's worth noting that Kohli's strike rate was a point of contention in the recently concluded Indian Premier League. However, he responded to his critics with his career-best performance in terms of strike rate during the tournament.
