Punjab Cricket Association spokesperson Sushil Kumar has confirmed that Mandeep Singh, the right-handed top-order batsman will lead their state in the upcoming Ranji Trophy season.

Mandeep Singh to lead Punjab in the Ranji 2018-19

The opening game of Punjab is against Andhra Pradesh in Visakhapatnam from November 1^st. Mandeep even led the side in the recently concluded Vijay Hazare Trophy but failed as a captain as well as they were unable to qualify for the knockouts. Last season, when their team was looking strong on the paper, they failed to even qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament. But this time around, the Punjab Cricket Board is showing immense faith in their squad which has a perfect balance of experience and youth. And they think that this team has what it takes to go all the way.

“Punjab Ranji team is a blend of youth and experience. Shubman Gill, Anmolpreet Singh, Sanvir Singh, Abhishek Sharma, Mayank Markande are the youngsters in the team. The experience will be on the shoulders of Mandeep Singh, Gurkeerat Mann, Siddharth Kaul and Barinder Sran,” a statement by Kapoor said.

The second game of the campaign for Punjab is up against Madhya Pradesh which is again an away game for the side. This match will commence from November 20. Punjab is placed in the Elite Group B this time around. Their group consisted of nine teams including themselves. The other teams are Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bengal, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Hyderabad, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Even Mandeep himself had a lacklustre outing in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He performed as a part-time bowler picking up 6 wickets in 7 matches that he played. He scored only 213 runs in the same number of matches which is pretty ordinary for a top order batsman and especially for a skipper.
