Bangladesh's Test captain Najmul Hossain Shanto has expressed cautious optimism ahead of the highly anticipated Test series against India, starting on September 19th, 2024. Following Bangladesh's historic series win against Pakistan, Shanto highlighted the increased confidence within the team, but acknowledged the significant challenge India poses.
Speaking about the upcoming series, Shanto emphasized the need for Bangladesh to focus on teamwork rather than relying solely on specific players or departments. “It’s not just about our spinners or pacers; it's about playing as a cohesive unit,” said Shanto. He stressed that while the spin department, with players like Nayeem Hasan, has considerable experience, success in the series will hinge on contributions from all departments—batting, pace, and spin.
“If we play as a team, we can make a difference. It's not just the spinners' responsibility; the batters and pacers also need to step up,” he stated.
Shanto did not shy away from praising the Indian team, especially in terms of their overall experience. He acknowledged that India’s fast bowlers, when compared to Bangladesh's, are more seasoned, though he believes both sides are on par in terms of skills. “In terms of skill, we’re close, but India have an edge in terms of experience,” Shanto commented, showing respect for the Indian side that is ranked higher and boasts greater Test match experience.
However, he emphasized that the key to success lies in performing well over the course of five days. “If we play good cricket for five days, we will have an exciting match,” Shanto said confidently.
Shanto also shared insights into the team's preparations, noting discussions with the coaching staff and detailed practice sessions to ensure they are ready for the challenge ahead. The captain believes that the team is preparing well, both mentally and physically, and that their plans for the series are in place.
"There are plans in place for both spin and pace. We’ve discussed our schedules with the coach, and we are ready to make the most out of the practice sessions,” he added.
