Rohit's T20 cricket career ended in style. He guided his country to victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup in Barbados, raised the trophy, and quite casually declared his retirement from T20s.
Before the ODI series against Sri Lanka, Rohit recently told the media that he hasn't accepted his retirement and believes he would be called up to the team for a significant T20I tournament.
“I feel like, I’ve been rested from the T20s like it used to happen in the past. And there will be big tournament coming up and we have to get ready for T20s again. I still feel it’s like that so I don’t think I’m completely out of the format,” said Rohit in the pre-match press conference.
Notably, after India's poor 2022 T20 World Cup campaign, both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli had been sidelined from T20 cricket, and Hardik Pandya had taken charge of the team. But Rohit and Kohli were called up shortly before the World Cup, and it was declared that Rohit would lead the squad in the major competition. With outstanding team leadership, the 37-year-old helped the squad win the ICC trophy for the first time in 11 years.
Rohit will lead the team in the upcoming three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, which begins today.
