Following the humiliating defeat of India in the first Test against Australia in less than three days, the nature of Pune pitch assisted abnormally to spinners, has been under scrutiny. ICC match referee Chris Broad rated the pitch as ‘poor’ asking BCCI’s view in the issue. Now, all has turned around in a totally new dimension after former BCCI Secretary Ajay Shirke accused curators of ‘pitch doctoring’ and asked for a CBI probe. India lost the match by 333 runs.
Heavily criticizing the pitch, Ajar Shirke, who is also the former President of Maharashtra Cricket Association, termed the phenomenon as ‘pitch – fixing’ hence demanded proper inquiry.
“I would like to see a CBI inquiry being initiated by the administrators appointed by Supreme Court. It (doctoring pitches) has often plagued Indian cricket and it is high time we to get to the root of this mess. Instead of pointing fingers at various people without any evidence, I would like to see a CBI probe to find out the real culprit. Let they (CBI) check the phone records and find out who is passing on these messages” – Shirke told to Hindustan Times.
Former BCCI Secretary also said, “(Ever) since the spot fixing in IPL 2013 came to light, the whole board had been thrown out. Now let us see what steps the court appointed administrators take to get to the root of pitch – fixing.”
“Pune has historically prepared seaming wickets. So what had suddenly gone wrong? Was the local curator intoxicated?” – A furious Shirke asked.
