In a league dominated by star-studded teams, Durbur Rajshahi enters the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2024 as a relatively less-heralded squad. Despite this, young cricketer Akbar Ali, the 2020 ICC U19 World Cup-winning captain for Bangladesh, remains confident that his team can shine on any given day with disciplined performances.

When compared on paper, Rajshahi’s lineup may appear less formidable than some of its BPL competitors. However, the unpredictable nature of T20 cricket fuels hope within the camp. Speaking to the media, Akbar Ali emphasized his belief in his team’s ability to upset stronger opponents.

“You have to be optimistic about the team you play for. We are confident in our squad. If we perform to our potential, we can beat any team on any day,” said Akbar. “T20 is a game where results are decided on the field, not on paper. It’s a short format where momentum plays a huge role, and we are ready to fight hard.”

Rajshahi’s roster lacks the big names that dominate headlines, and there is uncertainty about the inclusion of high-profile international players during the tournament. Addressing the situation, Akbar explained, “The management can better address whether any overseas stars will join mid-tournament. As players, our focus is solely on performing well on the field.”

Akbar also lauded the management’s efforts, adding, “I am sure the management is trying its best to bring in top-tier players. But for us, the key is to work with the team we have and stay fully focused on our preparations.”

With the tournament just around the corner, teams have limited time for preparation. Akbar acknowledged the challenges, saying, “Tournaments like this are always tightly scheduled, and practice time is limited. Teams often have to share practice facilities, so we focus on adapting quickly and making small, immediate adjustments if needed. Larger changes are planned for the offseason.”

Despite the absence of marquee players, Akbar believes teamwork and momentum can drive Rajshahi’s success. “T20 isn’t played on paper. It’s a game of moments. If we can seize momentum early and play as a unit, there’s no reason we can’t perform well,” he explained.

Rajshahi’s journey in the BPL 2025 begins on December 30, with a challenging opening match against defending champions Fortune Barishal. Though the odds are against them, Akbar and his team are ready to defy expectations and prove their mettle on the big stage.
