Former Indian captain Virat Kohli played a spectacular innings against the New Zealand cricket team in the group stage fixture of the ICC Men's ODI World Cup 2023 tournament at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala on Sunday.
Virat Kohli scored 95 off 104 balls with the help of 8 fours and 2 hits over the fence. India's run-machine might have missed his century in the game but he still created a record, by going past Sanath Jayasuriya's overall run-tally in One-Day Internationals.
Former Sri Lanka's aggressive opening batter Sanath Jayasuriya scored 13,430 runs in ODIs. Virat Kohli edged past Jayasuriya to become the fourth-leading run-getter in the 50-over format. Virat Kohli has 13,437 runs to his name.
Sachin Tendulkar sits on top of the list with 18426 runs whereas former Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara comes second on the list with 14234 runs. Australia's batting great, Ricky Ponting sits third on the list with 13704 runs.
Virat Kohli anchored the run-chase with his smart batting approach and in the end, he missed out on scoring a well-deserving century by just five runs as he was dismissed by Matt Henry in the fag end of India's innings. The Men in Blue won the game by four wickets with 2 overs to spare.
After the game, Indian captain Rohit Sharma said, "He (Kohli) has done this for us so many years. He backed himself to do the job. Kohli and Jadeja pulled us back when we lost a few wickets in the middle. The fielding is something we pride ourselves on. Today the fielding wasn't clinical," he added.
"Ravindra Jadeja is one of the best fielders in the world. These things happen. We know that fielding is something that will decide a lot of things going forward. We love travelling and playing in different parts of the game," Rohit Sharma said at the post-match presentation.
