Azam, who had earlier held the No.1 position in T20I batting rankings, said: "The ultimate ambition and goal is to lead the Test rankings, which are the real testament and reward to a batsman's calibre, reputation and skills. I understand to achieve this objective, I will not only have to perform consistently, but more importantly, against the top sides."
In Test batting rankings, Azam is currently the sixth, while his career-best was to be at fifth. He is also currently the third best batsman in the 20-over format.
He has currently 760 rating points in Test batting rankings. The No.1 at the moment is Kane Williamson with 919 points, while the next places belong to Steve Smith (891), Marnus Labuschagne (878), Joe Root (831) and Virat Kohli (814). So, it is apparent that Azam will still have to travel a long way to reach what he believes is his ultimate destination.
However, Azam is overall the only fourth batsman from Pakistan after Zaheer Abbas (1983-84), Javed Miandad (1988-89), and Mohammad Yousuf (2003) to attain the top position in ODI batting rankings.
Before him, modern-day great Kohli had a long reign of 1,258 days at the summit, and Azam also hoped he would be able to remain at the top for an extended period of time.
