For a change, Virat Kohli & Co will have a new brand name on their jerseys from September onwards as Chinese mobile-maker Oppo will be replaced by Byju's. For the uninitiated, Byju's is a Bangalore-based educational technology and online tutorial firm. [caption id="attachment_125884" align="aligncenter" width="770"] Byju's to replace Oppo on Indian jerseys.[/caption] Since the past couple of months, Byju's can be seen on Indian TV ads and after it got popularity, students of all age groups in the country started downloading the app. They have also given good reviews as well. Team India will sport Oppo on their jerseys till the West Indies tour which starts from August 3 and comes to a close on September 2. Once, South Africa tour of India starts from September 15, Byju's will takeover the jersey. In March 2017, Oppo bagged the Indian team sponsorship rights for a five-year stint, i.e. till March 2022 for a massive amount of Rs 1079 crores, outsmarting Vivo mobiles' Rs 768 crore bid. Needless to say, according to a Times of India report, Oppo decided to exit the space as it finds the value at which it acquired the rights in 2017 to be "expensive" and "unsustainable" The report also goes on to say that India's governing body BCCI will continue to receive the same amount from Byju's and hence the board will be at no loss for the whole term of the deal which runs till March 31, 2022. Oppo was paying BCCI a sum of Rs 4.61 crore per bilateral match and Rs 1.56 crore for an ICC event match. Earlier, STAR India used to pay Rs 1.92 crore per bilateral match and Rs 61 lakh per ICC match. "The Oppo and Byju's are negotiating among themselves on the possible handover of shirt sponsorship deal. The CoA has been intimated that they are discussing among themselves on the transfer of sponsorship" a senior BCCI official told PTI on condition of anonymity. "The BCCI has a clause which allows the transfer of sponsorship. Since there is a secrecy clause, the financial dealings can't be spoken about," the official said. "The BCCI stands to gain if there is a transfer of sponsorship. The two parties in question will have to pay an extra 10 per cent (between them) and also give notice of six months. They must be negotiating who will carry the burden of those extra 10 per cent," the official added.
