Spain's cricket team has made history by setting a new world record in T20 International (T20I) cricket, surpassing India's longstanding achievement.
In an extraordinary feat, Spain became the first-ever men's team to secure 14 consecutive victories in T20I matches. This achievement unfolded during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Sub-Regional Europe Qualifier Group C, where Spain defeated Greece by seven wickets on Sunday, August 25, at the Port Soif Ground in Guernsey.
Previously, the record for most consecutive T20I wins was jointly held by India and Afghanistan among major Test-playing nations, both having won 12 matches on the trot. Spain shattered this record last week, first tying it with a narrow one-run victory over the Czech Republic on August 22 and then surpassing it with their win against Greece.
Before Spain, Malaysia and Bermuda held the overall men's record with 13 consecutive T20I wins. However, Spain has now gone one step further, making their 14-match winning streak the highest ever in the men's game. Their incredible run began on February 25, 2023, with a victory over the Isle of Man.
In comparison, India's winning streak of 12 consecutive T20I victories occurred between November 2021 and February 2022. Afghanistan achieved the same record from February 2018 to September 2019.
Though Spain lead the charts in men's T20I cricket, the all-time record for the most consecutive T20I wins belongs to Thailand Women, who achieved an astonishing 17-match winning streak.
This remarkable achievement places Spain at the forefront of the global T20I stage, highlighting the rise of cricket in non-traditional cricketing nations. While India remains a dominant force in major cricketing events, Spain's latest accomplishment proves that the sport is growing and thriving in unexpected places.
Teams with Most Consecutive Wins in Men's T20Is:
· Spain: 14* (Streak ongoing)
· Malaysia: 13
· Bermuda: 13
· Afghanistan: 12
· India: 12
The feat also marks a significant moment for associate nations, as Spain join the likes of Bermuda and Malaysia in achieving T20I glory on the global stage.
