Two of the injured persons were taken to the hospital.
Ranatunga, who is now serving the country as the Minister of Petroleum, is known to be a loyalist of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, entered the building where the supporters of the new Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa shouted slogans.
The horrendous incident took place when the cricketer-turned-politician visited the CPC office, while several Ceylon Petroleum Corporation workers objecting to his presence at the spot.
Ranatunga was rushed into the building in the aftermath of the shooting and was rescued by paramilitary police units. He was covered out in a police uniform and wearing a bulletproof vest and helmet.
Reports saying that two of Ranatunga's body guards have been arrested and the area have been cordoned by heavy police security with crowds protesting against the shooting. Police leave has been cancelled and soldiers were deployed in parts of Colombo in what was seen as a show of strength.
Sri Lanka is facing a political crisis after President Sirisena sacked Prime Minister Wickremesinghe on Friday, and appointed former strongman Rajapaksa as the new prime minister.
Sirisena also suspended parliament till November 16 after Wickremesinghe sought an emergency session to prove his majority.
