Bangladesh (BAN) and New Zealand (NZ) will face each other in the second ODI of the three-match series at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on September 23. Rain played spoilsport as the opening ODI between both teams was cancelled.
Bangladesh will face New Zealand in the second of the three-match ODI series at the Shere Bangla National Stadium on September 23.
The first ODI between Bangladesh and New Zealand was washed out due to rain. Only 33.4 overs were possible on the day before rain ended the game early. However, the overs were enough to cause New Zealand some concern ahead of the second game. The wicket turned sharply and the Kiwi batters never looked comfortable at the crease.
Will Young and Henry Nichols scored 58 and 44 respectively, but the innings were difficult and the batting rate was rather slow. New Zealand will have to bat better to have a chance in the series.
The Bangladesh batters had no chance to bat but were impressive with the ball. Bangladesh will try to play with the same intensity and get a win before the World Cup.
Team Preview
Bangladesh
The hosts will go into this game confident after humiliating the New Zealand batting line-up in the first ODI of the series. Mustafizur Rahman finding his rhythm is great news for Bangladesh ahead of the World Cup.
He was well supported by left-arm orthodox Nasum Ahmed, who bowled three maidens in his 8 overs and bagged two wickets for just 21 runs. The skipper will be confident of bowling first if he wins the toss again.
The opposition does not have many experienced players in their batting line-up and Bangladesh will look to capitalize on this and take advantage of New Zealand's unfamiliarity with the conditions here.
Furthermore, the hosts have a solid batting line-up for this series. Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudullah are making their comeback for Bangladesh and will be key players to watch out for in the batting department.
They also have Litton Das and Soumya Sarkar who can build partnerships and play longer innings. However, after Towhid Hridoy in the midfield, Bangladesh do not have many experienced players who can complete the team.
Therefore, one of the middle order batters needs to stay at the crease longer to ensure a great finish for the team.
New Zealand
New Zealand will have to do without most of their key players here. They are coming off a series defeat in England where their batting failed miserably.
And here in Bangladesh they not only miss their regular captain Kane Williamson, but also midfielder Daryl Mitchell.
Besides Mitchell, the experienced pacer, Tim Southee also suffered an injury on the England tour and is now out of this squad. Now they have Tom Blundell and Rachin Ravindra at number 5 and 6 in the batting line-up.
Although Blundell has experience, he has not played much one-day cricket and is mainly seen in the Test team. Ravindra has shown promise but has not been very consistent in the ODIs.
Much will depend on Will Young, who put up a good fight at the top after the visitors lost two early wickets. Henry Nicholls is another important middle order batsman. Chad Bowes and Cole McConchie also have a chance in this squad and should look to make the most of this opportunity.
Trent Boult and Lockie Ferguson will be the key players in this side, while Ish Sodhi is one to watch out for when it comes to spin. Spinners will find help in these conditions and hence Rachin Ravindra will also play a key role.
Pitch Report
Spinners are generally preferred on the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium pitch, so batters have to remain patient to get a reasonable total on the board. Therefore, bowling first after winning the toss could be the right decision at this venue.

Bangladesh Key Players
Towhid Hridoy – Towhid will also be keen to continue his good run with the bat. The batsman did well in the Lanka Premier League and then put in some good performances in the Asia Cup.
Nasum Ahmed – Nasum picked two wickets in the 1st ODI. He entered a sharp curve and was not easy to negotiate. Help him again conjure magic with the ball.
New Zealand Key Players
Rachin Ravindra – Rachin will be an important player for Kiwis. The left arm spinner will be crucial for the visitors in the middle overs. He can also contribute helpful runs down the order.
Trent Boult – Boult will be crucial for New Zealand. Early wickets are key to restricting the opposition to a low score and Boult is a master at giving teams early breakthroughs.
