Police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekera told Reuters, "Colombo Crime division arrested Ranatunga over the shooting incident and he will be produced to the court shortly.”
Ranatunga, captain of Sri Lanka's 1996 World Cup winning side, has been serving as the Petroleum minister of the country.
The political crisis in Sri Lanka turned in a conflicting state on Sunday when bodyguards of 54 year old Ranatunga opened fire towards the supporters of new Prime Minister Mahindar Rajapaska leaving one person dead at spot and other two were hospitalized.
The shooting took place when Ranatunga arrived at the ministry which was not taken lightly by the supporters of Rajapaska who started giving slogans in protest.
Tense situation arose with some reportedly attempting to assault the former cricketer. Later, the bodyguard who opened fire, a policeman, has also been arrested.
The consequence of the abrupt shooting brought more complications into the scenario; the petroleum trade unions launched strike over the death of the CPC (Ceylon Petroleum Corporation) employee and demanded the arrest of Ranatunga.
