Jos Buttler's resignation as England national cricket team white-ball captain after the team’s shocking early exit from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 has left a void in leadership. Buttler who announced his decision on February 28, had been at the helm since June 2022 leading England cricket team to T20 World Cup glory but facing tough defeats since. With England needing a fresh start the question is who will take over?
who-will-replace-jos-buttler-as-englands-white-ball-captainHere are three strong candidates who could be the next England captain in One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and T20 Internationals (T20Is):
1. Harry Brook
Harry Brook has already proven himself as one of England’s best player in all formats despite his recent form struggles. At just 26 the right-hander has leadership experience having captained England during the 2024 ODI series against Australia national cricket team where he amassed 312 runs at an impressive average of 78 and a strike rate of 127.9.
While England lost the series Brook showcased his ability to lead from the front with the bat. He’s expected to be a key figure in England’s cricket future making him a top candidate for captaincy.
2. Liam Livingstone
Liam Livingstone has a lot of experience playing T20 cricket with over 300 games under his belt. He also led the team in the 2024 series when England toured to West Indies after Buttler suffered an injury. Although England lost the series 2-1 Livingstone's experience and leadership qualities under difficult circumstances qualify him as a good candidate
However his recent form in white-ball cricket particularly since the India series may work against him as the ECB looks to rebuild.
3. Joe Root
Joe Root the English former Test captain has never led the side in ODIs, but his experience and stature in the team could make him a strong contender. While his captaincy in the longest format had its ups and downs Root’s consistency with the bat is undeniable. With 6,702 ODI runs, including 16 centuries he’s one of England’s best-ever white-ball players. His leadership could help England transition through a challenging phase especially with the T20 World Cup and ODI World Cup looming.
