In a massive setback for Australia, opening batter David Warner has been ruled out of the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy second Test against India in Delhi due to a concussion. Matt Renshaw has been named as Warner's replacement in the Australian Combination.
In the second Test, which began on February 17, Friday, at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Warner was hit in the helmet as he faced the delivery of Indian pacesetter Mohammed Siraj. He then continued playing but was soon dismissed and went back to the dugout. After India sacked Australia for 263 runs on the first day and began his batting innings, Warner did not join his team on the field.
Under ICC rules, Warner is allowed to be substituted at halftime of the XI game due to his concussion. Match umpire Andy Pycroft approved Renshaw coming on for Warner ahead of Saturday's game.
During Friday's opening session, Warner waved the team doctor off after an attempted pull shot went off his top edge and then hit him on the left side of his helmet grille. He showed no immediate signs of discomfort and kept hitting.
Warner undergoes an assessment ahead of third test
Warner received extensive treatment for the elbow injury from the Australia team's team doctor and physio, but strangely he was not checked for a concussion or had his helmet changed. The team doctor checked Warner after the 10th over when he changed his gloves, but instead of thoroughly inspecting Warner or the helmet, the doctor returned to the dugout.
He was said not to be feeling "100 percent" at the time, and after additional evaluation that evening he failed a concussion test and was therefore forced to withdraw from the game.
"Warner will now follow the phased return to sporting protocols ahead of the third Test at Indore, in line with Cricket Australia guidelines," Cricket Australia said in a statement.
Renshaw will bat as an opener in the second innings, but ICC match official Andy Pycroft has clarified that Renshaw is not allowed to bowl in the game in place of Warner. Renshaw took part in the first Test in Nagpur but, after the team lost by an innings, was benched for the second game to make room for Travis Head.
