With the highly anticipated ODI series against Afghanistan just a day away, the Bangladesh squad faces significant setbacks, losing star players like Shakib Al Hasan and Litton Das. Shakib, who had been uncertain about playing, ultimately withdrew from the series, while Litton remains sidelined due to illness. Adding to the complications, left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed and fast bowler Nahid Rana couldn't travel with the squad due to visa issues.
Addressing the press in Sharjah, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto acknowledged the impact of these challenges. “Yes, it's tough," Shanto said in response to a question about the recent setbacks. "If everything had gone smoothly, it would have definitely been beneficial for the team." However, he remains focused on what the team can control and emphasized that each player is committed to giving their best, despite the hurdles.
The captain noted that while the absence of Shakib leaves Bangladesh without a seasoned left-arm spinner, he’s hopeful that Nasum and Rana will join the squad soon. Shanto stated, “I still believe that Nasum and Rana will make it in time. The cricket board is handling the situation well. There’s still some time before the match starts.”
When asked if the team would be impacted if Nasum and Rana arrive just a day before the first game, Shanto admitted it would have been ideal for them to join earlier, but remains optimistic about adjusting. The captain acknowledged the team will feel the lack of a left-arm spinner, especially with Afghanistan’s lineup featuring several right-handed batters. However, Shanto is confident that young leg-spinner Rishad Hossain could serve as a suitable alternative, adding, “Rishad has been effective in the T20 format and might be a strong option for us.”
The Bangladesh-Afghanistan ODI series is set to begin on November 6 in Sharjah, with Bangladesh aiming to overcome these obstacles and put up a strong fight.
