An absorbing day of Test Cricket has come to an end. New Zealand were flying at the start before Sundar's wicket surge deflated their middle order and folded them up for 259 runs. And then Tim Southee knocked over Rohit Sharma and gave the Kiwis a flying start.
Opting to bat first, New Zealand lost their captain Tom Latham earlier on to Ravichandran Ashwin. And then he had another and removed No. 3 batter Will Young cheaply. It was then opener Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra, the duo stitched a crucial 62-run stand together to put up a fine comeback after a sloppy start. Ashwin had Conway after his 65 and Washington Sundar removed the other one.
New Zealand were going strongly. But they slipped from their strong position after the fall of Rachin as Sundar ran riot through the New Zealand middle order and folded them up for 259 on the board.
Ravichandran Ashwin and Washington Sundar shared all the 10 wickets, whereas Sundar had his career - best figure of 7/59.
In reply, Tim Southee gave New Zealand a flying start as he knocked over Rohit for a 9-ball duck. But Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal then saw off the remaining period to go down on 16-1 by the end of the day 1.
