Tim Paine, who resigned last year after the sexting scandal involving a former Cricket Tasmania official ahead of the Ashes series, has reportedly started training in recent weeks.
Former Australia Test captain Tim Paine will return to play top-flight cricket for Tasmania in the 2022-2023 season after fruitful talks with Cricket Tasmania CEO Dom Baker, sen.com.au reported on Monday.
Tim Paine, the former Test skipper of the Australian team, is about to make his return to first-class cricket. According to the latest developments, the 37-year-old is most likely to play for Tasmania in the 2022-2033 season following a fruitful discussion with Tasmania Cricket CEO Dom Baker.
The wicketkeeper-batter was previously released from his contract following his infamous sexting scandal that rocked Australian cricket last year. He was also dropped from the captaincy, with Pat Cummins replacing him. He was only involved with the game late last season when he got into the scheme of things after being given an unofficial coaching role with the team.
Paine's playing career was thought to be over after he was dropped from Tasmania's contract list in May this year and it seemed unlikely he would find a way back into the team. After taking time off from cricket following his retirement as captain, Paine returned to the Tasmanian cricketers late last season in an unofficial coaching role.
His future as a player remained uncertain until the release of Tasmania's contract list in May, with his on-field career looking to be over after 35 Tests and 147 top-flight games.
Paine last played in a second XI game for Tasmania in late November 2021 as he attempted to prove his fitness for the Ashes after undergoing complicated neck surgery. He was in the squad for the Marsh One-Day Cup game for Tasmania on 26 November but announced on the morning of the game that he was on an indefinite break.
According to Monday's report, there was no indication Paine would play for the Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League (BBL).
