Background

Tanvir made his first-class debut for Rawalpindi against Peshawar in October 2004. In his first match he won 3 wickets. In the second match he impressed everyone with his 97 runs and also took 3 wickets.

He represented Pakistan Academy on their 2007 tour to Bangladesh. He showed everyone his all-round performances and was selected for the ODI series against Australia A at home. Indian Premier League

On March 11, 2008, Tanvir was signed by Jaipur franchise, Rajasthan Royals for US$100,000 in the second round of the Indian Premier League player auction.

In his third game of the tournament on May 4, Tanvir won six wickets against the Chennai Super Kings at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. He finished the tournament as the tournament's highest wicket-taker with 22 wickets from 11 games at an average of 12.09, an economy rate of 6.46 and a strike rate of 11.20, the best among bowlers with over six wickets.

He signed a one-year deal with Surrey County Cricket Club in July 2009 for £75,000. In January 2017 he took the most wickets in the 2016–17 Regional One Day Cup with a total of 15 layoffs. In April 2018, he was called up to Balochistan's squad for the 2018 Pakistan Cup. In March 2019, he was named to Punjab's squad for the 2019 Pakistan Cup.

In September 2019, he was named to Northern's squad for the 2019–20 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy tournament. International Career

Sohail Tanvir belongs to Rawalpindi of an Awan tribe. An all-rounder, he's a hard-hitting left-handed hitter and an unorthodox left-arm medium-paced bowler who also throws the occasional orthodox left-arm spin. Was selected for Pakistan's squad for the inaugural World Twenty20 after Shoaib Akhtar was sent home. He made his Twenty20 debut in the tournament, winning six wickets in six games, with best bowling numbers of 3 for 31 in four overs against Australia. Despite being considered an all-rounder, Tanvir didn't stand a chance to bat in the tournament until the final, where he made his first international runs with a six from his first ball and helped Pakistan get back into the game.

After impressing in the ICC World Twenty20, he was selected to play against South Africa in the ODI series in October 2007. He was then selected for the India tour and won eight wickets in the ODI series. He also participated in the Test series that followed, making his debut in place of the injured Umar Gul. World Cup 2011

Despite being back with the team for the two-Test series and the last Twenty20, Tanvir was not selected and after missing an international cap for thirteen months he was called up to Pakistan's 15-man World Cup squad and eventually returned to the national team back In the first ODI against New Zealand after Pakistan decided to beat Tanvir, he scored six runs as Pakistan went out for 124. However, Tanvir also took one wicket, it would prove to be Pakistan's only wicket of the match as New Zealand won by nine-goals.

Tanvir was ruled out from the 2011 World Cup because he was unable to complete full rehabilitation after surgery for a knee problem that had dogged him for two years.
