International Career
Test Career
Kapali made his Test debut against Sri Lanka in Colombo in 2002, going 39 and 23 with the stick and taking a few wickets with the ball. The selectors believed in him and were held in South Africa for the next series.
In his next 16 Tests he took just 4 more wickets and that included a hat-trick against Pakistan in 2003. This was spread over two overs and when he locked in Umar Gul LBW with the first ball of his 3rd over Kapali he became the first Bangladeshi bowler to reach the Test cricket milestone and the youngest ever, aged 19 years and 240 days. He ended up with numbers of 3/3. His effort to quickly clean the tail also allowed Bangladesh to lead their first first innings.
With the bat, Kapali has struggled in Test cricket so far, scoring his highest score of 85 against the West Indies in Chittagong.
Kapali has the unfortunate distinction of playing for the losing side in all 17 of his friendlies for Bangladesh.
One Day Internationals
A few days after his Test debut, Kapali made his ODI debut against the same opponent and in the same place. He had a disappointing game as he only made 2 runs and failed to pick a wicket. The selectors kept him for the entire series and Kapali made 15 runs in three games and conceded a single wicket.
In One Day International cricket, he was in and out of the side, impressing more with the bat than the ball. He hit the fastest century by a Bangladeshi batsman (86 deliveries) in a match against India during the 2008 Asian Cup. A record that was surpassed two years later by Shakib Al Hasan. He also holds the Bangladeshi record of 7th wicket partnership of 89 with Khaled Mashud set against Kenya in 2006.
Rise to Glory
Kapali scored his first 50 of his international career against West Indies in Dhaka in 2002. He made 52 and formed the backbone of the innings as his side scored 139 overall.
In the next friendly in Chittagong, Kapali showed his talent with a well-done 85 to delay an inevitable defeat. It remains his highest score in his Test career.
In the equivalent ODI series against West Indies, Kapali's unbeaten 89 of 92 deliveries in Dhaka caught everyone's attention. His result remained little consolation for Bangladesh as no one could join him to pursue West India's goal of 282.
The best shot of Kapali's international career remains the 115 of 96 he scored against India at the 2008 Asian Cup in Karachi. However, the blow wasn't enough to give Bangladesh a victory.
Records
Alok Kapali has the unwanted but unique distinction of losing all 17 test matches he has played.
His century against India in the Asian Cup was the fastest hundred scored by a Bangladeshi at the time. It was later surpassed by Shakib Al Hasan.
