Perhaps the most talked-about topic in Test cricket in the last 1 year has been England's new style of game, ‘Bazball’ cricket. Ever since Test team head coach Brandon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes took charge, England's Test playing style has changed. England is also getting success with such a formula.
England have won 11 of the 13 Tests played so far under McCullum-Stokes. They are more admired for the type of victory than for the winning. England is now playing Tests with the mentality of playing attacking cricket from the first ball. It is as if the English are changing the way of playing Test cricket with 'Bazball' cricket.
However, former Australia Test captain Steve Waugh is skeptical whether England's ‘Bazball’ will work against in-form Australia. In this case, he urged England to prepare 'Plan B'.
Waugh said, “That is the big question mark over so-called Bazball. What is Plan B? Have they got a Plan B? If they haven't then they are going to be found out.”
“They have shown they are good enough to carry this style of cricket off but the ultimate test will be against a world-class bowling attack, which Australia has got. It is exciting but to me the jury is out at the moment. Does [Bazball] hold up under scrutiny against a really good bowling attack in maybe challenging conditions?” he added.
"There is no doubt it won't work all the time but I think with McCullum and [captain Ben] Stokes they will have the courage to go through with it. They can't chop and change. Have they got a back-up plan? I'm not sure. That might find them out."
There is not much time left for the Ashes. This year's Ashes will begin with the Edgbaston Test on June 16.
