Former New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori has been hired by Sunrisers Hyderabad as their head coach for the 2024 Indian Premier League season. SRH confirmed the development via their social media accounts on Monday 7 August.
SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) have appointed former New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori as their head coach ahead of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The franchise finished bottom in the table for the second time in three seasons in 2023 despite undergoing a major roster overhaul.
The appointment also confirms the departure of Brian Lara from the coaching staff. The legendary West Indies batsman joined the franchise in the 2022 season as a batting coach and strategic advisor before being promoted to head coach following the departure of Tom Moody.
Vettori is currently the head coach of Birmingham Phoenix men's team with the Hundred and, since May 2022, with the Australia men's national team. His coaching resume also includes stints as head coach with the Barbados Royals in the CPL, the Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash and Middlesex in the Vitality Blast, and spin bowling advisory roles with Bangladesh.
In his previous tenure as IPL head coach, Vettori helped RCB reach the playoffs in 2015 and the finals in 2016, where they incidentally lost to the Sunrisers. This is the third high-profile coaching announcement in the IPL ahead of the 2024 season, with Justin Langer replacing Andy Flower at the Lucknow Super Giants before Flower joins RCB in the same capacity.
After bottoming out in the 2021 season, ahead of the mega auction, the franchise opted to keep Kane Williamson, Abdul Samad and Umran Malik. With one of the biggest wallets, they have built a squad from the ground up that includes current captain Aiden Markram, Marco Jansen, Nicholas Pooran and Rahul Tripathi.
SRH went one step further in the 2023 mini-auction by acquiring lucrative signings such as Harry Brook and Mayank Agarwal. However, it was evident that there was a lack of cohesion throughout the build.
It was evident when captain Aiden Markram failed to give a reason for Umran Malik's absence from the starting XI in their home game against RCB.
"To be honest, I'm not exactly sure. He's definitely an X-factor player, bowling at 150 km/h, but I don't really know what's going on behind the scenes," the South African said at the time.
