Sunil Narine, all-rounder who won the 2012 T20 World Cup in West Indies, announced his retirement from international cricket on November 5. Narine, who played his last T20I against India in 2019, has retired from all formats of the game at the international level.
Former West Indies spinner Sunil Narine announced his retirement from international cricket on Sunday, November 5. Narine played 65 ODIs, 51 T20Is and 6 Tests for West Indies and scalped 165 wickets across all formats. The 35-year-old was also part of West Indies' winning campaign in the 2012 T20 World Cup.
Sharing the news of his retirement on Instagram, Narine wrote: “To all my fans, colleagues and loved ones: a letter regarding my retirement from international cricket. Eternally grateful,
“I appreciate that it has been over four years since I last played for West Indies, but today I am announcing my retirement from international cricket,” Narine wrote in a letter shared on social media published.
“Publicly I am a man of few words but privately there are a few people who have given me unwavering support throughout my career and helped me achieve my dream of representing the West Indies and to them I have my deepest gratitude. “
Narine owed his success to his father. He has 92 wickets in ODIs, 52 in T20Is and 21 in Tests.
“Especially my family and especially my father. He is always with me when I go to the field and I am indebted to his support and love for carrying me through the times when I questioned whether pursuing my dreams was really worth it. Thank you dad, I hope I continue to make you proud,” said the all-rounder.
“I would like to thank Cricket West Indies, the coaching staff, the passionate West Indies fans and of course my teammates who have enabled me to play at the highest level, in all formats and with some memorable achievements.”
However, Narine made it clear that he will continue playing franchise cricket across the world. Also, the ongoing Super50 Cup will be his last appearance in 50-over domestic cricket.
“I am also taking this opportunity to retire from domestic 50-a-side cricket. I love representing Trinidad and Tobago, the country of my birth, and adding another title by winning this current Super50 trophy would be the perfect farewell. Apart from that, things will of course continue as before for me in the franchise world for the foreseeable future,” concluded the 35-year-old.
