Shakib Al Hasan got huge success in the 2019 ODI World Cup batting at the No. 3 position for the team. Everyone should remember Shakib's epic performance in the World Cup. With another World Cup knocking at the door, the question of playing Shakib at No. 3 is coming back again.
With the flow of time, Shakib no longer bats at No. 3 in ODIs, Najmul Hossain Shanto takes that place. Shakib is dropped to No. 4 position. The team management is in favor of playing Shanto at No. 3 and Shakib at No. 4 in big tournaments like the upcoming Asia Cup and World Cup. Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) director Khaled Mahmud Sujon is also not very confident about playing Shakib at No. 3.
Talking to the media on Tuesday (August 15), Sujon said, “Actually, if Shakib plays at No. 3, then at what position Shanto will play is a big question. What Shakib has done in the middle order for Bangladesh, Shanto has never done in domestic cricket or anywhere else. As a result, this place will be completely new for him. It's really a matter of combination. He may have to play anywhere in the need of the team.”
But Shakib is more effective than Shanto at No. 3 in ODIs. Shanto has batted at No. 3 in 20 innings so far. He scored 598 runs with an average of around 30 and strike-rate is 80.59. He has a century with three fifties.
On the other hand, Shakib scored 1539 runs by batting at No. 3 in 36 innings. Average is around 50 and strike-rate is around 87. He hit 2 centuries with 13 fifties. And, in the 2019 World Cup, Shakib scored 606 runs batting at No. 3 in 8 matches at an average of 86.57. Strike-rate was 96.03. A dream performance for any cricketer. Although Bangladesh's performance in the World Cup was not very good, Shakib was outstanding. In terms of bat and ball, this all-rounder pulled Bangladesh alone.
Shakib's performance in the 2019 World Cup should be remembered by cricket fans of the country forever. The cricket lovers of the country are also dreaming big about the upcoming World Cup.
