Melbourne, December 26 - Australia's fast bowler Mitchell Starc's left arm has been sent off after a finger injury he sustained on day one of Monday's second Test against South Africa at the MCG.
Australia's fast left arm bowler Mitchell Starc has been sent for scans after a finger injury he sustained on the first day of the second Test against South Africa at the MCG on Monday.
Starc was hit in the middle finger while trying to catch bowling from spinner Nathan Lyon while stationed at Long-On. Starc was sent off immediately after the injury when the ball hit his fingertip, but was spotted back on the field with a strapping on his middle finger.
Meanwhile, Mitchell Starc has been sent for scans to assess the extent of his injury, according to a report in West Australian. It remains to be seen if he can bowl in the second innings. He picked up two wickets in the first innings and looked in good rhythm too. Australia are hoping the injury is not that serious and the cricketer will take part in the remainder of the test match.
Australia ends the day 45/1
As for the game of the day, the whole of Australia was into it. Despite a good throw, the South African batsmen again batted poorly and squandered an early advantage. While their skipper Dean Elgar scuttled in search of an unnecessary single, the rest of the top 5 didn't really look midway. At 67/5 it looked like the curtain was literally on for them, only for Jansen and Verreynne to forge a valuable partnership.
However, when the 112-run tally was destroyed, the Proteas collapsed again, much to the disappointment of their fans. In response, Australia lost Usman Khawaja early on, but David Warner looked confident in his 100th Test at 32 in midfield. The hosts are still 144 runs adrift of South Africa's first innings result and will look to take a big lead.
