Former Australian cricketer Simon Katich has voiced his frustration over Australia's slow over-rate during the first day of the second Test against India in Adelaide, placing the responsibility on captain Pat Cummins. Despite bowling India out for 180 in the first two sessions, Australia managed to bowl only 44.1 overs, drawing criticism from Katich.
Katich, speaking to 9News and SEN, pointed out that captains are held accountable for over rates, and under current rules, they face fines and points penalties in the World Test Championship. However, he argued that these penalties are insufficient to deter teams from slow over rates.
"This will be the 22nd over bowled in nearly two hours of cricket. I know there have been wickets, but that’s a disgrace. That’s ridiculous. Captains are responsible; we know they are because they’re the ones that are copping fines," Katich remarked.
One of the key points Katich raised was the underutilization of spinner Nathan Lyon, who bowled just one over during India's first innings. While Cummins and the fast bowlers made the most of the conditions, dismissing India quickly, the lack of overs from Lyon contributed to Australia's slow over rate.
"We know the fines aren’t working because it hasn’t changed anything. Potentially it’s going to be suspensions for Test matches. And if it’s the very next Test, you’re losing your skipper, and that’s maybe how tough it has to be to get this up to scratch because it’s not good enough," Katich stated.
