Ireland’s prominent all-rounder, Simi Singh, is facing a life-threatening health challenge as he battles acute liver failure.
The 37-year-old cricketer, who has played 35 ODIs and 53 T20Is for Ireland, is currently admitted to Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon, Haryana, awaiting a liver transplant. His wife, Agamdeep Kaur, will be donating part of her liver to save him.
Simi's illness began five to six months ago when he experienced recurring fevers while in Dublin. Medical professionals in Ireland were unable to diagnose the issue, which led Singh and his family to seek treatment in India. Upon further examination at the PGI Hospital in Chandigarh, Singh's condition was identified as acute liver failure, with doctors warning of the risk of slipping into a coma if not treated urgently.
Simi's father-in-law, Parvinder Singh, revealed, "The doctors advised us to take Simi to Medanta, as the situation was critical. Thankfully, Simi's blood group is AB+, making him a universal receiver, which allows for a smooth match with his wife's liver."
The liver transplant is expected to take place soon, with doctors optimistic about a successful outcome. Cricket Ireland CEO Warren Deutrom expressed the cricket community’s concern, stating, “We have received shocking news that our friend Simi Singh is currently dealing with life-threatening health circumstances. On behalf of Cricket Ireland, and indeed the wider Irish cricket community, I extend our best wishes and prayers to Simi.”
