Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid Saikat, Bangladesh’s trailblazing umpire in the ICC Elite Panel, has once again proven his mettle on the global stage. In the recently concluded Durban Test between South Africa and Sri Lanka, Saikat showcased an impeccable umpiring record, as none of his eight decisions reviewed under the Decision Review System (DRS) were overturned.
This feat not only highlights his consistency but also underscores his growing reputation as one of the most reliable umpires in international cricket.
Throughout the match, eight decisions made by Saikat were sent for DRS reviews—one during South Africa's first innings, three in their second, and four during Sri Lanka’s second innings. Every single decision was upheld upon review, affirming Saikat’s accuracy on the field.
South Africa’s First Innings: Sri Lanka’s Lahiru Kumara appealed against Wiaan Mulder, but Saikat’s “not out” decision was confirmed by DRS.
South Africa’s Second Innings: Asitha Fernando’s appeal against Aiden Markram in the fourth over was reviewed, only to validate Saikat’s original call. Later, Prabath Jayasuriya’s review for Mulder’s dismissal and Temba Bavuma’s “not out” decision were both upheld by DRS.
Sri Lanka’s Second Innings: Kagiso Rabada’s back-to-back reviews for Dimuth Karunaratne and Pathum Nissanka were unsuccessful. Angelo Mathews and Kamindu Mendis also challenged Saikat’s decisions, but the DRS once again confirmed his accuracy.
Saikat’s consistent performance has solidified his position in the cricketing world. At 48, he remains the first and only Bangladesh umpire in the ICC Elite Panel. His flawless officiating in the Durban Test further cements his growing legacy, earning him respect and recognition internationally.
