Bangladesh could not start the Ireland series with a win. The game was washed away by the torrential rain. The match was abandoned at last.
After losing the toss and batting first on Tuesday (May 9), Bangladesh collected 246 runs after losing 9 wickets in the scheduled 50 overs. In response, Ireland scored 65 runs after losing 3 wickets after 16.3 overs. After that, it rained heavily. Later the match was abandoned as the rain did not stop.
In the match, however, some arguments were seen between the cricketers of the two teams. The game of the 16th over was going on at the time of Bangladesh's batting. Najmul Hossain Shanto batted Graham Hume’s fourth ball. He tried to get a run from that ball, but Shanto didn't take any more runs as the situation was not favorable. But there was quite a tangled situation. Shanto rushed back to the crease. At the other end, Towhid Hridoy also returned to the crease in time. But the Irish fielders claimed that Shanto went to take the run in front of the wicketkeeper. As a result, Shanto and the Irish fielders got involved in the argument. After the match, Shanto explained this matter himself.
In the press conference after the match, Shanto said, "There was no sledging. The throw that was made there was their perception that I had blocked the wicketkeeper. But that was not the point. Actually, I didn't see the ball. The throw was not good. As a result of which naturally we took the run. They thought that I blocked the wicketkeeper and took the run. There was nothing like that. I don't think there was much of a fight. In no time, everything was fine again.”
Finally, Shanto got out after playing an innings of 44 runs off 66 balls. The series is currently tied at 0-0. The two teams will meet in the second match on May 12.
