Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has thrown his weight behind India's team selection for the second Test against New Zealand in Pune, praising the decision as based on "common sense." The Indian team, led by captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir, faced criticism for making three changes in their playing XI for the match at the MCA Stadium, which began on October 24, 2024. However, one of these changes, the inclusion of off-spinner Washington Sundar in place of Kuldeep Yadav, turned out to be a game-changer.
However, Washington Sundar's brilliant bowling performance saw him pick up a seven-wicket haul for 59 runs in 23.1 overs His contribution played a crucial role in India's bowling dominance against New Zealand in the first Test, silencing many critics of his selection.
Manjrekar took to X (formerly Twitter) to voice his concern about the decision. He felt that dropping Kuldeep, who has consistently performed, for Sundar was a questionable call.
Washington Sundar’s inclusion was justified by the team management as a strategic move to counter New Zealand’s multiple left-handed batsmen. Head coach Gautam Gambhir explained in the pre-match press conference that Sundar’s off-spin could provide better control and variety against left-handers.
"We just felt that they have four or five left-handers in the playing XI. So if we want another bowler who can take the ball away from the left-handers, it's always going to be useful for us," Gambhir said.
