Man of the match | Mohammad Saifuddin (Bangladesh) |
In a commanding display at the Hong Kong Sixes 2024 quarterfinal, Bangladesh clinched a decisive victory over the UAE, advancing to the semifinals with Mohammad Saifuddin leading the charge with both bat and ball. UAE won the toss and opted to bowl first, hoping to restrict Bangladesh’s top order. However, the Bangladeshi openers had other plans.
Opening batter Jishan Alam and Abdullah Al Mamun began cautiously, adding 9 runs in the first over. They soon picked up the pace, taking 20 runs off the second over with some powerful boundary-hitting. The onslaught continued as Mamun and Jishan hammered another 16 runs in the third over, propelling Bangladesh to 45 runs without loss by the end of three overs.
Abdullah Al Mamun scored a rapid 31 off 11 balls, finally dismissed in the fourth over after setting Bangladesh up for a strong finish. Mohammad Saifuddin then entered and unleashed a blistering 36 off just 9 balls, staying unbeaten until the end. With Jishan also remaining not out on 34 from 17 balls, Bangladesh posted an imposing total of 111/1 in their allotted 6 overs.
UAE's Muhammad Zuhaib managed to take one wicket, but the bowlers otherwise struggled to contain the Bangladeshi batters.
Chasing a big target, UAE faced immediate setbacks. Saifuddin struck twice in the very first over, putting the UAE under pressure. Though Abu Hider Rony bowled a tight second over, conceding just 7 runs, the following over saw Abdullah Al Mamun give away 28 runs, though he did pick up the vital wicket of Sanjit Sharma.
Despite some late resistance from UAE’s middle order, they ultimately fell short of the target, securing Bangladesh’s place in the semifinals with a comfortable margin. This emphatic win underlines Bangladesh's strong form and their determination to claim the Hong Kong Sixes title.
