As England's standout batter Joe Root topped the ICC Men’s Test Batting Rankings on Wednesday, Kane Williamson's tenure as the game's top batter came to an abrupt end.
With his game-winning 87 in the first innings of the Birmingham Test match against the West Indies, Root went to the top of the standings. Of the top six, he was the only one with a score higher than 20.
Root has held the top spot nine times now. He held the top spot in the rankings for the first time in August 2015, and he last held it in June of last year following a strong showing in the Ashes series opener in Birmingham.
Williamson has fallen to second place in the Test batter rankings as a result of Root's performance. Furthermore, Australia's Steve Smith and India's Rohit Sharma are currently tied for third place, followed by Pakistan's Babar Azam and New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell. Harry Brook of England has dropped four spots to eighth after a less memorable series.
England fast bowler Mark Wood makes the top 20 bowling rankings for the first time with his Player-of-the-Match performance of 7 for 92 in the last Test against West Indies a few days ago.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, the opening batter for India, has returned to the top of the men's T20I rankings. He amassed 80 runs at a strike rate of 178 during the three-match series against Sri Lanka, which his team won 3-0.
