Captain Rohit Sharma has been ruled out of the second test against Bangladesh, which begins in Mirpur on December 22. He missed the first test and will not travel to Dhaka again.
In not-so-good news for Indian fans, regular India captain Rohit Sharma has reportedly been ruled out of the second friendly against Bangladesh. The Indian team was led by KL Rahul in the opening Test in Chattogram after Sharma was unable to take part in the game due to injury.
Rohit Sharma injured his thumb trying to catch in the recently ended ODI series against Bangladesh. He suffered the injury while pitching in the first innings of the second ODI and had to be taken to a hospital for a check-up. Things took a turn for the worse for the Indian opener after coming out to bat despite his injury.
Rohit's thumb has yet to fully recover, which will prevent him from participating in the second test. He seems to be suffering from a bit of stiffness and with the team having several important tasks ahead of them, management has decided not to risk the captain at this moment.
The report went on to say that Rohit is currently in Mumbai and would have managed to bat, but doubts are looming over his line-up. The medical team believes the injury could become serious if struck again while on field duty. However, the Indian skipper is expected to be back at home for the bilateral series against Sri Lanka from January 3rd.
Earlier on Sunday, India defeated Bangladesh in the first Test by a huge 188-run margin to go 1-0 in the 2-match series. Kuldeep Yadav, returning to the Indian Test setup after 22 months, finished with an 8-wicket match haul, including his career-best bowling figures - 5 for 40 in 16 overs. On the batting front, KL Rahul scored his first Test hundred, while veteran Cheteshwar Pujara posted his fastest Test tone with 130 deliveries.
KL Rahul will continue his managerial duties for the series playoff against Bangladesh
Rohit's opening partner and vice-captain, KL Rahul, will continue his duties as assistant skipper for the second Test in Dhaka, with India eyeing a clean win in the two-match series. Although there is no official news on the influential opener's return, he is likely to take part in India's white ball series against Sri Lanka, which begins on January 3.
His absence means Shubman Gill will retain his seat for the second Test after registering a maiden barrel in the game's longest format in Chattogram. He is hoping for another productive game in the second Test and makes strong arguments for his selection on the red-ball side.
