Ambati Rayudu has withdrawn from the squad of major league cricket team Texas Super Kings (TSK) for "personal reasons" for their inaugural season.
The Texas Super Kings (TSK) suffered a major blow when Ambati Rayudu was eliminated from the first edition of Major League Cricket (MLC). Rayudu's decision comes after BCCI is still considering the situation of retired players. TSK shared an update on Twitter confirming Rayudu's absence from the first season of MLC.
"Ambati Rayudu will not be available to participate in the first season of MLC with the Taxes Super Kings due to personal reasons. He will continue to cheer for the team from India.”
Rayudu, who recently retired from all forms of cricket after winning the 2023 Indian Premier League with the Chennai Super Kings, was set to take part in the MLC's inaugural season. Rayudu was set to become the first India international to play in the MLC, joining New Zealand duo Devon Conway and Mitchell Santner along with Dwayne Bravo and David Miller for Texas.
Earlier in the day, after the Board's Apex Council meeting in Mumbai, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah said the Board would come up with a policy to prevent "predetermined" retirements of cricketers. Like the CSK star, some players have in the past joined a foreign T20 league shortly after retiring from international cricket or the IPL.
“We will work out a policy to prevent the trend of pre-determined retirement. Officers will create a policy and send it back for approval," Shah said.
According to report, this policy is likely to be a cooling-off period, during which players cannot join a foreign private league until they have completed a certain amount of time since retiring.
The policy report was initially met with criticism from observers. Many believe this is harsh and discriminatory (and possibly illegal) against many cricketers who deserve a chance to earn a living from abroad after retirement.
It will also be interesting to see how that plays out, as retirement isn't "official." Many cricketers including Rayudu, Moeen Ali and most recently Tamim Iqbal have announced their retirement and then dropped out of cricket to play again.
So the question would be whether the BCCI would prevent players from coming out of retirement, and if they had any legal right to do so at all.
