Television pundits scrutinized Gulbadin Naib's alleged cramping incident during Afghanistan's Super Eight match against Bangladesh in St Vincent because it occurred during a pivotal moment in the match.
The match fall in delayed many times because of the rain, so the DLS score came into play and Afghanistan coach Jonathan Trott seemed to be indicating to his team to try and slow down the match as Afghanistan scored just 115 runs in 20 overs and Bangladesh were in the chase very well.
Naib, fielding at first slip, fell holding the back of his leg between the third and fourth deliveries of Noor Ahmad's 12th over. He eventually returned to the field in the thirteenth over. Then, in Bangladesh's chase, Naib bowled the fifteenth over and dismissed Tanzim Hasan Sakib.
However, Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan supports Naib and says, “Rain is something not in our hands but mentally we knew we have to play 20 overs and take 10 wickets. That's the only way we could win. But Gulbadin he had some cramps. But his wicket was invaluable to us.”
Afghanistan beat Bangladesh by 8 runs (DLS method) in a breathtaking match in St Vincent on Tuesday (June 25). Rashid Khan's miraculous spell of 4 wicket haul and cool-headed finish from Naveen-ul-Haq in the crucial death over took them to the semifinal in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup for the very first time in history.
