Rangpur Riders are set to embark on an exciting journey as they head to Guyana for the inaugural Global Super League, kicking off on November 26. A few team members, including national players, will depart on November 18, with others joining in phases. The team, led by Nurul Hasan Sohan, has been rigorously preparing under the guidance of assistant coach Mohammad Ashraful at the academy ground of Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.
Today, the Riders unveiled their official jersey during a press conference at the Mirpur Stadium, attended by Nurul Hasan, team director Shahnian Tanim, and BCB director Nazmul Abedeen Fahim. The captain expressed his optimism about adapting to Guyana’s conditions and delivering strong performances in the tournament.
Sohan reflected on his last visit to Guyana during Bangladesh's 2022 tour of the West Indies, noting the similarities between the pitches there and those in Bangladesh. He stated: "I played the last ODI series in Guyana. The wickets there are somewhat similar to those in Bangladesh. We've had discussions with coach Mickey Arthur about our plans and potential challenges. We’ll get three to four days of practice there, which we aim to utilize effectively."
Rangpur are joined by formidable franchises such as the host team Guyana Amazon Warriors, Pakistan's Lahore Qalandars, England's Hampshire Hawks, and Australia’s Victoria. Sohan acknowledged the competitive nature of the tournament, emphasizing its significance for Bangladeshi players: "This is a big opportunity for our players. A global tournament like this brings intense competition. For a Bangladeshi franchise to compete on an international platform is a massive achievement."
Rangpur’s squad boasts a mix of experienced and emerging talent, including Mahedi Hasan, Mohammad Saifuddin, Soumya Sarkar, Rishad Hossain, and Afif Hossain. They are joined by domestic players like Saif Hasan, Arafat Sunny, and Kamrul Islam. The team has also secured four international signings: Caribbean all-rounder Matthew Forde, Wayne Madsen, Zak Chappell, Harmit Singh, and Khushdil Shah.
Sohan highlighted the importance of the tournament for players with limited T20 experience: "This will be a challenge and a great learning experience for us. We don’t often get opportunities to play many T20 matches. This tournament, along with the NCL T20s and BPL, will prepare us for future competitions."
He further added: "We also have a responsibility. We will strive to give our best so that such opportunities continue to come for Bangladeshi cricket in the future."
