The Indian side's young opening batsman, Prithvi Shaw, who has been looking to return to the side for a long time, will now play in the County Championship. Prithvi Shaw will make his county cricket debut for the Northamptonshire team on August 4, in which he will feature at the Royal London One-Day Tournament.
After some logistical delays, Prithvi Shaw is finally ready for his first county assignment. The opening game in Mumbai was able to arrive in the UK on time after apparent problems with travel documents. His county stint begins with one-day cup game on Friday (August 4).
As Prithvi Shaw looks to get his career back on track, he has finally come to the UK to play his first cap at county cricket. The highly-rated opener has fallen down the Indian side's rankings in recent months and has not played for India since July 2021.
“I am delighted to report that Prithvi has arrived in the UK today (Sunday) and will be taking part in our one day cup from Friday 4th August. The official announcement will be made tomorrow (Monday)," Ray Payne, chief executive of Northamptonshire County Cricket Club (NCCC), told.
Shaw secured the NOC from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and was subsequently allowed to skip the ongoing Deodhar Trophy interzonal one-day championship in Puducherry. However, his continued absence from NCCC games led to confusion over his assignment.
At one point there was doubt about his participation, as the NCCC claimed there was no announcement of Shaw joining the club. However, after the NCCC CEO has confirmed his arrival, he is ready to serve in the county.
The One-Day Cup, a 50-over competition on the national program of the England and Wales Cricket Board, begins on Tuesday but the Northamptonshire Steelbacks will not play their first game against Gloucestershire until Friday at Cheltenham College in Cheltenham.
Shaw will join the likes of David Willey and Andrew Tye alongside the Steelbacks. John Sadler is the county head coach.
Shaw (23) made a dream debut in international cricket, scoring a Century against West Indies as an 18-year-old. But he's since strayed, managing to play just four more Tests alongside seven white ball games (six ODIs and a T20I) for India.
Shaw will become the fourth Indian to be signed by a county this season after Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Arshdeep Singh and Navdeep Saini. Rahane had signed up with Leicestershire but he canceled his contract to take a break.
