Australia beat lionhearted Scotland to two balls to spare and 5 wickets in hands to ensure England's qualification for the Super-Eight of ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024. Travis Head [68 off 49] and Marcus Stoinis [59 off 29] helped Australia chase down the massive total of 181 in St. Lucia.
Being asked to bat first, Scotland had a rapid start. George Munsey and number three batter Brandon McMullen strung together for a 89 run stand off only 48 deliveries before Maxwell struck and removed the former one for 35 off 23 balls. McMullen scored a blitzkrieg knock of 60 off 34 deliveries.
Captain Berrington held on one end and ensured Scotland going strong in the middle overs as well. Berrington scored a brisk 42 off 31 deliveries and Scotland posted a competitive 180 on the board.
Barring Mitchell Starc, all the bowlers chipped in with wickets and get the job done Australia.
In reply, Australia had a horrid start, losing David Warner earlier on to a top edge to Wheal, Marsh too fell in the process and Australia were in deep trouble. Things became more turbulent when Maxwell was knocked out to Mark Watt.
Travis Head held on one end together and joined hands with Stoinis. Both the batters were taking time to finding their rhythm. Stoinis started it with hitting sixes and fours, Head found it tough to get going as brought up his fifty off 45 deliveries. But after reaching to his fifty, he smashed three consecutive Safyaan Sharif to make up the strike rate before falling to the same bowler against run of play on 68 off 49 balls.
Stoinis on the other hand was in enormous touch, smashing everything that came towards him and brought up a 25 ball fifty. At the end of the day, Stoinis' blistering fifty helped Australia chase down the total with 2 balls to spare and 5 wickets in hands.
With the win of Australia, both England and Australia are through to the Super-Eight, while Scotland misses out due to the NRR.
